Presentations and Speakers

Keynote Presentation: Building a Credible Lineage, Despite Missing Information, Conflicting and Incorrect Records and Undocumented Publications, Thomas W. Jones, PhD, CG, CGL, FASG, FUGA, FNGS

A case study teaches how to establish credibility of undocumented genealogies, merge seemingly separate identities, remedy record errors, resolve conflicting evidence, and separate same-named men.

Biography: Tom has been pursuing his ancestry since 1963. For the first twenty years he was clueless about what he was trying to accomplish and how to do it. When he started climbing the genealogy learning curve he repeatedly experienced the challenges, joys, and rewards of tracing his ancestors reliably and understanding their lives. Tom eventually became an award-winning writer, board-certified genealogist, editor of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, recipient of honors from genealogical organizations, and author of the textbooks Mastering Genealogical Proof and Mastering Genealogical Documentation. Using his nearly lifelong career in education as a springboard, including classes since 1999 online, he enjoys teaching at weeklong genealogy institutes, weekend seminars, and local, national, and international genealogy conferences, either “virtually” or in person.

Presentation: A Brief History of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, Joseph R. Klett

Joe Klett will present the history of the Society, how it came to be and its evolution.

Biography: Joseph R. Klett is Executive Director of the New Jersey State Archives in Trenton, and a long-time trustee and officer of GSNJ. He is a past editor of GSNJ’s newsletter and its journal, The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey. In 2014, Joe authored the award-winning special issue of GMNJ commemorating New Jersey’s 350th anniversary year, on the subject “Understanding New Jersey’s Geography in the Proprietary Period.” Joe has been a genealogist since the age of 12, and has traced direct ancestry back to most of New Jersey counties
